Opole, Poland, May 23, 2019 – Italy won 3-0 against Germany in their last match in Pool 1, which gives them three wins in that many matches so far.

Italy player Indre Sorokaite: “We are happy about this victory, because we fought hard and earned it. We made more mistakes than usual and were always so-so with points, but we saw that if we push some more and put in that extra bit of energy, then we can play our game. Maybe today we were a little more tired, because we had double practice in the morning, but it doesn’t matter, it’s still three – zero and a victory. I am proud of my team! During this tournament everyone makes some changes in the line-ups. We changed a lot today and I think that the team who won are the ones who managed to adapt better.”

Italy coach Davide Mazzanti: “We won in three out of three games in Poland. It’s incredible! For us it is really important to climb up in the ranking, because we want to play in the Final Six and the end of VNL. We are very happy because of our results, but we know that we have to improve our games. We didn’t expect a 3-0 score with Germany, because at this moment we are not as confident as we can be. Sometimes we were losing our concentration and creating many problems in our own game. We know that we have to change it for the future. I am happy that we had the opportunity to play in Opole – it is fantastic to play in Poland because of the media and fans. People simply love volleyball here! We will come back to this country during #EuroVolley and we are very happy about it.”

Germany player Hanna Orthmann: “Our goal is to improve from match to match and that’s what we are doing. We played with a new setup today and considering that, we performed well. We were fighting until the end of each set and for every point. It’s a pity that we didn’t win at least one set or point, but we had a good game and week here. We are improving and that’s a main point. I played as an opposite, but I always have to be ready for everything as anything can happen. It was a new situation for me, but I think I did well and the team helped me a lot.”

Germany coach Felix Koslowski: “I think in the last two matches there were five sets in which we were very close and lost by only two points. It really shows that we have a lack of experience in this team. Today we missed our opposite, so we had to find some solutions. Lippmann struggles with a small injury and we are in the first week of the VNL, so we didn’t want to take any risks. We brought our third libero [Linda Bock] to the team as an outside hitter and she played very well, even though she’s only 18 years old. Orthmann had to go to an opposite position, so considering all circumstances on the court, they did a great job. I am sorry for them that they couldn’t earn more, we were close so many times and I think my team deserved to win one or two more sets. We knew before that the first two weeks would be especially difficult for us. The team is not complete and we didn’t actually have much training together. We came here with young players who didn’t train together before, so for them it’s not easy. The team is improving and doing very well, so we are continuing our journey in the VNL.”
